The theme for the Third London Mandolin Festival on Sunday 15 May 2011 was
Echoes and Fugues
and we featured works containing repetition in various forms. All works were performed by the combined mandolin orchestra unless otherwise specified.
Vlado Sunko

Kastelanska Zvona
(The Bells of Kastela)

Sunko is a Croatian composer, conductor and professor. His works have been recognised in various competitions and festivals.
Kastelanska Zvona
, as the name suggests, simulates continuous church bells ringing.
Herbert Baumann
(1925 - )

(3 Movements for Plucked String Orchestra)

Baumman is a composer and conductor from Berlin, studying composition with Paul Höffer and Boris Blacher.
Eileen Pakenham
(1914 - 2009)

The London Mandolin Festival Orchestra performed Pakenham's

in 2009 and for 2011 we performed her

Greek Suite

The festival will now bring back a piece every year from a previous festival as voted by the players. In 2011 the festival brought back
Greek Suite
which was also popular with the audience.

(A Breton Suite in 5 movements)

Jager is a guitarist, composer and teacher from Baden.
Suite Armorique
is a folk suite based on the traditional songs and dances of the Breton region.

Wedding Tarantella

The performance of this piece was dedicated to Alison Stephens who had recently passed away after a long fight with cancer. This piece is still played in several London BMG groups including Lewisham BMG orchestra of which she was a member in her youth.

(Vibrations for Plucked String Orchestra)

Kreidler is a well known figure with our German counterparts, the BDZ (Bund Deutscher Zupfmusik), being a director of the BDZ and composing pieces for plucked string ensembles.

Claudio Mandonico

Preludio e Fuga
(Prelude and Fugue)

Mandonico is an Italian composer who learnt under Giancarlo Facchinetti. Mandonico directs the City of Brescia Plectrum Orchestra and teaches composition in Bergamo. The
whilst being a fugue is played both in a jazz and classical style.
